How Toughened Glass is different to Normal Glass and Tempered Glass? Why is it safe for your home?

Glass is everywhere! From buildings to cars and even our homes, it's a versatile material. But did you know there are different kinds of glass, each with its own strengths and uses? This post dives into toughened glass, a champion for safety, and compares it to other glass types like tempered, annealed, and heat-strengthened glass.

Normal Glass or Annealed Glass

Annealed glass is a foundational type of glass commonly employed in the manufacturing of diverse glass products. It is produced by heating the glass to a high temperature and subsequently cooling it gradually.

If annealed glass undergoes breakage, it splinters into sharp and sizeable shards that pose a safety hazard. The typical thickness of annealed glass ranges from 4 mm to 12 mm.

Toughened Glass Vs Tempered Glass Vs Heat-Strengthened

Toughened glass is produced by subjecting normal glass to extreme heat and then rapidly cooling it, leading to increased breaking resistance. If it breaks, it shatters into small, blunt-edged pieces that pose no harm.

Tempered glass goes through a similar process but undergoes additional chemical treatment for further enhancement.

Heat-strengthened glass is produced using controlled heating and cooling processes. The temperature employed in the heating phase is lower compared to the one used for toughened glass. Unlike toughened glass, when heat-strengthened glass breaks, it shatters into larger and more pointed fragments.

What Makes Toughened Glass So Great?

  • Super Strong: Toughened glass is several times stronger than regular glass, making it ideal for applications where safety is a top concern.
  • Thermal Stress Fighter: It can handle changes in temperature much better than regular glass, reducing the risk of breakage due to heat or cold.
  • Wide Range of Uses: Toughened glass is a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor applications in homes and buildings.

Where Can You Find Toughened Glass?

Look around! You'll likely see toughened glass in many places:

  • Keeping You Safe: Shower doors, partitions, and even car windshields often use toughened glass for added safety.
  • Adding Beauty and Functionality: Tabletops, cabinets, skylights, and railings can all benefit from the strength and style of toughened glass.

Here are some of the applications of toughened glass:

  • Shower doors and enclosures
  • Glass tabletops
  • Architectural glass panels
  • Home windows
  • Car windshields and side windows
  • Refrigerator shelves
  • Bullet resistant glass (when laminated)

Choosing the Right Glass

When selecting glass, consider the application and safety needs. Toughened glass is the clear winner for situations where strength and safety are paramount. For less demanding applications, tempered glass might be suitable. Definitely do not use normal glass (annealed glass).
